The Luzerne County native was swimming and playing with her boogieboard in knee-deep water when a wave crashed over her.
Around 3:30 she felt something hit her left leg and at first thought she had been hit on the shin by a horseshoe crab. She immediately rushed out of the water and then saw blood streaming down her leg.
Her mother, other beachgoers, which included a nurse and EMT, and life guards administered first-aid. She was taken to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin where doctors used 42-stitches to sew up the half-moon wound.
Based on photos of the wounds, it appears a blacktip or sand shark was the species responsible.

Another swimmer was bitten by a shark about 1-mile north of Palmetto Dunes earlier this year.
Wyatt Bowman,26, was enjoying the waters off Burkes Beach May 23.
The Okatie resident was about 50-yards off the beach when he started seeing fish flying out of the water. He knew this was a sign of a predator and started swimming for the beach.
As he was making his way back, a fish popped out of the water near him and he felt a pressure on his left foot. He didn’t feel much pain, but knew he had to make it to shore.
Once he was back on the sand, he walked halfway up the beach and then looked down to see his injured foot and collapsed.
An off-duty nurse and a Shore Beach Service lifeguard cleaned up the wound and alerted emergency personnel.
Bowman was taken to Hilton Head Hospital for treatment of several deep lacerations and was refereed to an orthopedic surgeon.
Thankfully the wound missed his Achilles tendon and after healing, he plans on swimming again.
